Differences between the CBI, ED & ED


The Enforcement Directorate (ED), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and the Crime Investigation Department (CID) are three of India’s most prominent law enforcement agencies. While all three agencies are responsible for investigating crimes, they have different areas of focus and jurisdiction. The CBI is responsible for investigating major crimes such as murder, kidnapping, and terrorism. It operates under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Government of India. On the other hand, ED is a specialized financial investigation agency under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. It is responsible for enforcing economic laws and fighting economic crime in India. CID is a statewide supreme investigation agency that deals with the supervision and control of criminal offenses that take place within the respective state. In terms of recruitment, one can become an A grade officer in the Criminal Bureau Investigation (CBI) by clearing the Civil Services Examination conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) or after clearing the SSC CGL examination. For ED, recruitment is done through the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) and Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exams. The two ways to join CID are - the candidate can either join the state police force and based on the service record, he/she can be promoted to the concerned department or they can qualify Civil Services examination undertaken by UPSC.
